From Belief to Behavior: How Values Guide Our Growth
Sometimes, the most transformative journeys begin with a single spark, a moment when values align with vision, and ordinary challenges become extraordinary opportunities.
At Lumine, success isn’t just driven by strategy; it’s rooted in who we are. Our values: curiosity, humility, intensity, and numeracy, aren’t abstract ideals. They are active, daily commitments that guide how we lead, work, and grow. These values don’t sit on posters; they show up in our decisions, our conversations, and our actions.
This is the essence of value-based leadership, an approach where leaders anchor their decisions and behavior in shared core values. Rather than relying on authority or hierarchy, value-based leaders inspire trust and performance by modeling the principles they expect from others. This kind of leadership fosters stronger organizational cultures and better business outcomes, and studies have found that companies led by value-driven leaders saw higher employee engagement, trust, and long-term profitability.
At Lumine, our leaders don’t just talk about values, they live them. They embody curiosity by asking hard questions, humility by listening first, intensity through relentless focus, and numeracy by grounding decisions in data. This leadership style isn’t just effective; it’s essential in a decentralized environment where empowering others is the key to scaling success.
It’s through this lens that we strengthen businesses, challenge assumptions, and build connections across our portfolio. Our values become the compass that ensures that as we grow, we do so with integrity, clarity, and purpose.
But what does value-based leadership look like in practice? We recently held our largest portfolio learning event, Illuminate, where we had a chance to connect with senior leaders and hear from them directly.
Humility
Our portfolio is built on humility — a recognition that no one person has all the answers, and that the best ideas often come from unexpected conversations. At Illuminate, we witnessed this value come to life, as leaders and team members across our businesses engaged in open dialogue, candid discussions, and collaborative projects, forcing them to think outside of what’s possible.
The last few years have been an incredible learning experience for me. When our integration process started at WideOrbit, we thought we needed to have everything figured out. We wanted to get it all right – every detail, every decision. But we quickly realized that the most important thing we could bring to the table wasn’t confidence or certainty; it was humility. Humility meant admitting that we don’t have all the answers. It meant listening first, asking questions, and staying open to new ways of thinking. We asked for help, adapted, and adjusted repeatedly. Together with the Lumine team, we built something strong.

Curiosity
Illuminate is more than a conference; it is a celebration of curiosity. It is a forum where questions are welcomed, assumptions are challenged, and learning never stops. Keynote speakers and panelists shared insights on scaling operations, fostering customer loyalty, and harnessing technological innovation in the communications and media sectors. Each session was designed to spark new lines of inquiry, pushing attendees to think bigger and bolder.
Workshops and breakout groups enabled deep dives into operational best practices, financial discipline, and leadership development. Guided by our commitment to continuous learning, these conversations emphasized practical takeaways that businesses could immediately implement.
In business, details matter. Curiosity empowers us to challenge ourselves and our teams, embrace new ideas, and adopt smarter ways of working. This spirit of inquiry fuels performance, drives cost efficiency, and ensures continuous improvement. I love diving into the mechanics of things, taking them apart and rebuilding them, much like solving a puzzle. Businesses are fascinating entities that need to be understood and continuously improved. The thrill lies in uncovering what’s happening within a business, spotting opportunities, and suggesting enhancements. It’s all driven by curiosity, questioning everything to learn, challenging assumptions and practices, and persisting until a solution is found.

Numeracy
While strategy and vision inspire, numbers drive decision-making. Numeracy is the ability to use data to navigate complexity and guide growth and was a cornerstone of Illuminate and embedded into how Lumine leadership operates.
By equipping our leaders with tools to better measure, analyze, and optimize their performance, we continue to build a culture where numeracy is a frontline leadership capability.
Numeracy isn’t about math. It’s about meaning. It’s about trust. It’s the ability to read the story behind the numbers. In business, numbers aren’t just data points; they’re signals showing what’s working, what’s not, and where to go next. Every leader needs to be numerate. Once you know your numbers, you can overcome challenges with confidence. The numbers tell the story, and you need to know how to read it. Being numerate means making smart decisions and leading with credibility. It helps you drive success and figure out where the real challenges are.

Intensity
At Lumine, intensity means being purposeful and focused in pursuit of our goals. That spirit permeated Illuminate, as attendees leaned into sessions with energy and a drive to elevate their businesses.
Our conference programming highlighted real-world case studies from within our network, spotlighting leaders who have transformed challenges into opportunities. These stories of resilience and operational excellence served as a powerful reminder that intensity, when combined with a disciplined approach, can unlock extraordinary outcomes. It is this intensity that fuels not just individual success, but collective advancement across Lumine.
In our businesses, intensity is much like an athlete’s training routine. The best athletes don’t rely on talent alone. They build their performance with persistence, discipline, and a deep awareness of their environment. They consistently learn, enhance, and fine-tune their technique. It’s also about mental and emotional strength. Just like an athlete, we must stay focused and continually sharpen our skills. Whether it’s understanding market trends, addressing technical challenges, or ensuring employee and customer satisfaction, intensity combined with consistency is the key to success.

Looking Ahead
As we reflect on the momentum sparked by Illuminate, what stands out most isn’t just the event itself, it’s the leadership it revealed. At Lumine Group, value-based leadership isn’t a concept we aspire to; it’s a standard we live by. Our leaders don’t rely on titles or hierarchy to drive impact. Instead, they lead through values—curiosity, humility, intensity, and numeracy—demonstrating them in every decision, every conversation, and every challenge they take on.
This approach creates more than alignment. It builds trust, resilience, and a culture where people are empowered to lead from wherever they stand. It’s how we scale decentralized businesses without losing cohesion. It’s how we turn complexity into clarity. And it’s how we ensure that as we grow, we do so with integrity and purpose.
Illuminate gave us a glimpse into this leadership in action. But the real story is what happens next, how these values continue to shape our businesses, inspire our teams, and guide our journey forward.
Thank you to everyone who leads with values. That’s how we illuminate the future together.
